Formerly known as the Department of Surgery Histology Core
Please contact us at histocore@surgery.wisc.edu to coordinate sample drop off and pick up.
The primary objective of the HRC is to provide a broad range of high-quality histology methods and resources to support basic, translational, and clinical science research at our institution and across the greater research community.
Our vision is to offer affordable histological services to investigators that complement, support, and advance the innovative research missions of our clients.
The HRC is here to provide support for your project from start to finish. We are open to all UW investigators and external clients.
Our facility offers a broad range of high-quality histological and immunohistochemical services on a fee-for-service basis. Services include routine histology procedures, staining, custom protocol development, and training/education. We work with animal and human tissue up to BSL 2 and utilize paraffin and frozen techniques. Our routine histology procedures include tissue processing, embedding, frozen and paraffin sectioning, H&E staining, and imaging.
We currently offer over 15 different types of special stains, including trichrome, PAS, MSB, ORO, and more, and are always looking for opportunities to expand our catalog.
IHC is available with brightfield or immunofluorescent detection. We have a catalog of over 70 verified antibodies at our disposal at no additional cost to the researcher. Our IHC protocols include multiplex labeling and same-species staining.
Our core provides the researcher with a unique opportunity to design and plan a study that optimizes the best tissue processing and staining techniques available. Individual attention to protocol and technique development allows us to offer personalized services for research and development. For researchers, this can look like developing a new antibody titration, collaborating on a dissection technique, creating a new multiplex staining protocol, or a specialized sectioning protocol.
We also offer training and education for microscopy and staining. We can work with you one-on-one or in a group as we go over microscopy basics, H&E staining, or IHC fundamentals.
